Dear Debi, Thank you so much for all your work and wisdom. The reason I gave your workbook a 4 rating instead of 5 is because of a kerfuffle in Section 2 titled, "Reasons dogs end up in shelters." There's a half sentence at the beginning.
I have fallen in love with a shelter dog in Manassas, Va., named Cosmos. My friend and I drove down there to meet him. Cosmo is friendly, excited, darling and takes treats gently. I just left a message for a supervisor to call me back as I have questions. I know he was picked up as a stray a couple weeks ago, he's listed as "housebroken?" He won't be neutered until he's adopted.
Your workbook has already helped me with questions I didn't think of. Depending on checking him out on Petfinder or the shelter's website, Cosmo is between the ages of 1 and 5. I am 75, but in good health. Will I still be able to care for him properly when he's 15 and I'm 90????? Who knows. I would re-read your section on training several times. It would be an absolute necessity for both of us. (Cosmo is a champion jumper - straight up and down.)
I have had dogs before, found in shelters. My Quigley, a toy gray poodle, was 16 when my vet agreed it was "time." That was May 3rd.
I hope Cosmo is adopted soon to a great family. Any advice, Debi?
Thank you for the feedback Charlene. And for catching the sentence structure error. I have fixed the text and a new file is avaiable for you to download if you wish.
It should read 'How and why do dogs end up in the shelter anyway? Why would someone give up a perfectly good dog? Many times it’s no fault of the dog the is given away. Some common reasons can be:'
As for adopting a younger dog, at this stage in your life... that's a judgement call only you can make. As you age, so will the dog and the dog will slow down too. So in my opinion, it's not out of the guestion. But I would have a back up plan in place if something should happen to you, who will take care of the dog? Planning for our pets is something everyone at any age should do.
